Allow me to welcome you to Dust 514.
First and foremost, I'm not a long time veteran of Dust. I started the game just a week before the game went into Open Beta. However, I did notice a dramatic change in the Dust gaming landscape. And it's all thanks to you new players (yes you...). So I decided to write some tips for how to get acclimatized to this game for Ambush (I've played too few Skirmish battles to offer valuable advice). I'll probably write one about Skirmish some time later.
AMBUSH
1) The Mexican standoff.
I don't know why this happens. Perhaps the devs will fix it soon. You're probably complain, "WTF! I spawned right in front of 2 bad guys!?"
Yes it happens. Remedy: Be prepared when you initially spawn in the game with the other players. For this reason, don't spawn in with the Sniper Rifle (unless you're really good with your sidearms).
2) Weapons have bad hit detection.
I'm writing this because I've seen people using shotguns at medium distances and lasers at close distances. Learn the optimum engagement range with the weapons you're going to specialize at. Laser rifles are mid range weapons. Shotguns are short range weapons. If your rounds don't hit the enemy after the first few shots, you either missed, or the enemy is out of range. You can train the 'Sharpshooter' related skills to increase the max range of your weapon category by increments of 5% per level.
3) The Swarm Launcher.
The Swarm Launcher is strictlty an anti-vehicle weapon. I've had my share of laughs killing players point blank because they're running around with a Swarm Launcher in hand hoping to shoot missiles at enemy soldiers for easy kills.
4) Snipers are useless!
Trust me. This is the thing that made a big contribution to the changing landscape. There are bloody snipers everywhere now. And they die a lot. Now I know what quick-scoping is. And it doesn't exist in Dust. I've had people ask, "How do you hold your breath?" and "How do you steady the scope?"
The answer: You can't hold your breath (at least not that I know of). The only way to steady the scope is to crouch. That makes you easy picking especially in a fast paced game like Ambush.
5) Tanks are uber godlike.
No. They're not godlike... Don't let the Armor and Shield of the tanks (they amount in the hundreds to thousands) fool you. No tank goes into the battlefield solo (not in my country's Armed Forces at least). Infantry support tanks. It's the same in Dust 514. Don't go gung-ho in tanks unless you wanna go broke fast. People in Dust hate tanks. Whenever I see a tank, I go "Free War Points on the way..." (because I'm gonna get my Swarm Launcher or Forge Gun out)
6) Heavy Machine Gunners are so over powered.
No they're not. HMG Heavies have terrible range. Heavies are slow. Heavies get winded fast. Use this to your advantage.
I'm running out of time to write some more. I'm hoping the more experienced players write some more tips below. AND REMEMBER:
IF ALL ELSE FAILS, just run with a big crowd of allies. You can't go wrong there. |

Sniping isn't useless if you're good at it. If you get at least 15 kills you probably can continue sniping because you're probably more useful than the average AR grunt. If you snipe and you're getting only a handful of kills every game, you should stop and do something else. To avoid being a sitting duck as a sniper, you need to position yourself in places where you can't be easily shot from almost anywhere on the map. Positioning is a big part of being a good sniper.
Swarm launcher is good for LAVs/dropships, but for tanks you should have a militia forge gun build setup, ideally. Forge guns are far more reliable tank killers than swarm launchers.
So I learned something. Forge guns for tanks. I've heard of dropships outrunning swarm missiles. |
